The skin, the largest organ of the body, is made up of many layers.
The epidermis, or the top layer of the skin is relatively thin,
and primarily acts as the protective barrier for the rest of
the skin. It is where melanin is produced which gives the color
to our skin and is its first defense to environmental wear and
tear to include sun exposure, pollutants, weather changes, etc.
The epidermis is also a mirror of lifestyle stresses, hormonal
changes and the natural effects of aging. As these elements take
their toll, it is in the epidermis that we often see a slackening
in the skin, fine lines, pigmented and vascular irregularities,
and various other types of lesions. The skin also begins to look
dull and often rough.
Under
the epidermis is a much thicker layer called the dermis. It is
the dermis that provides the epidermis with it’s much needed
blood supply and nutrients, as well as its structural support
woven in many layers of collagen. Over time, the dermis takes
its own beating, along with the epidermis, resulting in a deterioration
of collagen and a thinner, weaker skin that is characterized
by a loss of resilience and tone. This deeper breakdown in elasticity
is the cause of the formation of yet deeper wrinkles, and an
overall sagging of the skin.
Lasers target both the dermis and epidermis, and as stated earlier,
it is the coordination of different laser energies that allows
our practitioners to achieve the superlative results for which
AMA has
become known.
